Twenty-Two: Values in the Workplace

Today, let me share my notes during the Home Office Recollection. We are very much blessed to have as speaker, one of the most respected Titos in the community, Tito Mon De Leon. I hope you'd be able to gain something from it. :)


Definitions:


1. Work Values - values identified that enhances productivity

2. Relational Values - values that enhance work relationship
3. Trustworthiness - important in the work setting; employers and co-employees look for these characteristics when working with you
       * Do you have the highest ethical standards?
       * Do you honestly represent your capabilities?
       * Do you deliver what you say you're going to deliver?

What do employees look for you?
- CV / Resume
- IQ (Basic Intellect)
- Interviews
- Past Performance / Experiences
- Value for money they pay you

What do employees really want?
- EQ, not only IQ
- Present performance, not only your past successes,
- More value from you compared to what they pay you for
- Results other than your quality and attendance

What is highly appreciated? People who are able to postpone gratification. 

What do bosses want?
- Productivity. Output.
- Quality: Do it right the first time.
- Ideas. Not just initiative.
- Respect. Not just obedience.
- Team Player
- Presence

Recommended Values:
  •  Always show a positive behavior and right attitude at work.
    • Leave your problems somewhere else.
    • Present behavior problems were created at 10 to 15 years or younger. So move on. 
    • Be in control of your own life.
  • Strive to have a positive impact on your boss and colleagues.
    • Get to know your boss just as the boss wants to know you.
    • Learn how your boss thinks and decides.
    • "Sipsip" is a bad word sent out by envious employees.
    • Your boss is one key customer. Get to know him personally. 
    • Get to know your colleagues.
    • Shut your mouth. Open your ears.
    • Be a team player.
    • Office politics can be dangerous, so stay professional.
  • "WE" is the most important word. 
    • The six most important words in the English language are: "I admit I made a mistake." (humility, willingness to learn) 
    • The five most important words: "You did a great job."
    • The four most important words: "What is your opinion?" (value the other person)
    • The three most important words: "If you please"
    • The two most important words: "Thank you."
  • Deliver the "best possible service" to the customers.
    • All office works revolve around the "customer."
    • Relate your present work to the end customer (the user of your output).
    • Quality service means satisfying the needs of the customer to the maximum.
      • When your job does not have anything to do with the customer, close it.
      • In the CFC Home Office, our customers are the members of the community, and ultimately, Jesus.
  • Show your value added. 
    • Walk an extra mile.
    • Demonstrate that you have value beyond what they hired you for.
    • Find opportunities to help others beyond your job description (vs. "That's not my job." syndrome)
    • Show that you have potential to do other jobs.
  • Be dependable.
    • Dependability is doing what we are paid to do.
      • Proverbs 18:9 (One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.)
    • Dependability is doing what we promised to do.
    • Dependability is doing things promptly.
      • James 4:17 (If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.)
  • Be humble.
    • Humility is NOT the determined refusal to accept praise. 
      • To refuse to accept praise, even if the praise is sincere, denies the integrity of the praise-giver.
    • Humility is NOT always saying yes.
    • Humility is trustfulness.
    • Humility is being teachable.
    • Humility is thankfulness.
  • Work harder, faster, smarter, and better.
    • Do you work for pay or get paid for your work?
    • The only place where "success" comes first before "work" is the dictionary. 
    • Strive to have more skills than what they hired you for.
    • Look for improvements in your work processes.
    • Don't be a whiner. Be a winner. It begins with your attitude when you wake up in the morning.

Finally, Tito Mon ended with a very fitting Bible passage taken from Colossians 3:23-24.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters since you know that will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 

And may I just add that even without the reward, let our strongest motivation and our greatest consolation be the reality that everything belongs to God, and ultimately, it is He whom we work for. :)

At the end of our lives, when it's time for us to leave this earth and be judged for eternity, we may enter the Kingdom of Heaven and be welcomed by the loving embrace of the Father as He proudly whisper in our ears, "Well done, My child."

Understanding Lupang Hinirang

Every Filipino knows Lupang Hinirang (though some know it better as " Bayang Magiliw "). How can you not know it when it is the national anthem of the Philippines? This afternoon, I shared it to my teammates, and one commented, "Yun pala yun . Ngayon ko lang naintindihan."   He immediately downloaded it and converted to MP3.   So for those who have not seen it, once again, here is Joey Ayala's version of Lupang Hinirang. And I agree, you would never want to sing it in another way. (But that's just me. :D) This rendition is simply beautiful. Truly Filipino. :) Of course that doesn't mean we need to revise our national anthem but maybe we can consider about correcting the way we sing it (read: proper pronunciation). Jesus Week 2015: A Time To HEAL ♥

I had the best, most meaningful HOLY WEEK ever, so far (the best is yet to come!). :) Thanks to Joy who shared the Jesus Week poster on Facebook. It was God's personal invitation, and I couldn't thank Him enough for the grace that He also gave me to respond. Everything is grace. It was not just my personal decision to join. It was God's grace that allowed me to.  So how did it go? Well, as what I have told my friends, it was amazingly beautiful! The experience was priceless! On Holy Monday, I posted Fr. Jerry Orbos' acronym for HOLY WEEK . I experienced all of that and more! :)  I won't be able to share everything as there is just a lot of personal, intimate encounters with the Lord. But if I were to summarize, it was a time for me to HEAL. :)  H alt . Indeed, I was able to stop and just rest in the Lord. Before leaving Manila, I have already told myself that this retreat will be all about Jesus ( Jesus Week nga e :D ). No emails, no texts, no calls. I...

It has been a long and stressful day (the past three days have been lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng and stressssssssssssssssssssssssssssssful), but You are just so amazing, Lord that I couldn't sleep without telling You how grateful I am. :) Thank You, Lord for the miracle that You did yesterday.
